Infinity Power, a joint venture between Egypt's Infinity and the UAE's Masdar, has signed the EPC contracts for two South African solar plants totalling 773.6 MWp, announced at the Africa Energy Forum in Cape Town. Highveld Solar (285.6 MWp, Mpumalanga) and the Negwedi cluster (488 MWp, Free State) are set to power more than 450,000 homes and avoid nearly 1.8 million tonnes of CO₂ per year.

The deal illustrates the rise of platforms driven by regional sponsors: Infinity Power targets 10 GW of operational renewable capacity in Africa by 2032, aggregating solar, wind and storage across several countries. This developer-investor model, backed by Masdar's balance sheet, secures tickets of several hundred MW where public auctions sometimes struggle to materialise.

South Africa's utility-scale pipeline thus remains the deepest in Africa and sets the new sizing standard for private projects developed outside public auctions.

Why it matters

For a financial investor: these sponsor platforms (Infinity / Masdar) offer an aggregated, de-risked deal flow, more legible than a standalone project. Masdar's 10 GW African trajectory becomes an anchor to watch when calibrating continental exposure.
