Sub-Saharan Africa: CEI Africa invests €2m in Spark’s off‑grid model

CEI Africa announced on 20 August 2026 a €2 million investment in Spark, a Netherlands‑based provider of modular solar home systems and off‑grid solutions. The funding will accelerate Spark’s Catalyze and Connect initiatives, designed to expand distributor financing and reach underserved communities.

Spark’s Model

1. Distributor-focused: Spark works through local partners rather than selling directly to end-users.

2. Spark Invest program: Provides financing for distributors to acquire solar equipment, with repayments linked to customer revenues.

3. Reach: Spark has already delivered energy solutions to ~2 million people in 23 African countries.

4. Recent expansion: In Tanzania, Spark partnered with Ariya Finergy to deploy a 1.5 MWp solar plant with 2 MWh of batteries for Irvine’s poultry feed factory — its eighth African enterprise solar market.

Financing Context

CEI Africa was established by KfW in 2021 on behalf of Germany’s BMZ, with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation joining in 2022.

Managed by Triple Jump and implemented with GreenMax Capital Group, CEI Africa focuses on blended finance to support last-mile distributors.

Market Significance
